Tell us a little about yourself and your family.
I am a musician and own a live music company which I have had for over 20 years, David Rothstein Music. I grew up in Elk Grove Village and have lived in Chicago for the majority of my life. I graduated with a degree in music and communications from Western Michigan University.
My parents still live in the Chicago area. I recently got engaged and we are looking forward to spending many years together in Evanston.
What is your favorite part of living in Evanston?
I like the diversity of people that live here, as well as interesting shops and wonderful restaurants.
What are some of your favorite spots in Evanston?
We love going to Blue Spoon, 10 Mile, and Prairie Joe’s. We love going for walks along the lake near Northwestern. In fact, that’s where we got engaged!
Can you tell us a little about your business and what inspired you to start it?
We have a live music company that performs for weddings and events throughout the Chicagoland area and nationwide. We play for weddings, corporate events, and private parties of all sizes. We specialize in making each and every event as personal and authentic as it can be so that the client gets something that meets their specific needs from a jazz trio to our 14-piece orchestra.
I was inspired to start my music company because I was playing bass in other people’s bands and I found they were doing the exact same songs for everybody. I wanted to create a music company that truly cared about what makes each client special.
We ass lots of personal touches designed around what’s most important to each bride and groom. After their wedding, we can even donate their flowers to a nearby nursing home on their behalf with our Share Your Love program. In 2016, we won the most charitable wedding vendor in the United States from Wedding Wire!
What’s been the most rewarding part about owning your own business?
Being able to benefit so many couples and clients by working with Chicago’s most talented musicians. Reading their reviews and thank you letters is my greatest reward. When they refer us to their family and friends, that always makes it feel like all the extra work was worth it. Being able to employ so many musicians and staff is also a great feeling.
My goal with my life was always to make a difference to as many people as possible. Owning my own business gives me that opportunity and is what keeps me motivated every day.
What advice would you give someone who wants to start a business?
Surround yourself with people who are good at the things you’re bad at. Invest in the best equipment and always remind yourself why you started the business, especially when times get tough or if you’re faced with an ethical dilemma. Staying true to who you are will keep you on track no matter what. Don’t afraid to ask for help. Stay humble and hungry!
