Choosing a preschool or kindergarten program is an important part of a family’s educational journey for their child. For many families this is the first time their child will be learning and socializing outside of the family unit and finding a supportive and nurturing environment is the first big step in this journey!

School for Little Children has been educating, nurturing and inspiring children and supporting families for over 85 years! SLC believes that children learn through play in the context of relationships; building trusting relationships with children and families is the cornerstone of their mission. SLC serves children ages 2-6 and is excited to have their inaugural Kindergarten program up and running for the 2021-2022 school year!

SLC’s teachers (their biggest asset!) are dedicated to child development and nurturing the whole child with a strong emphasis on social/emotional learning. If a child feels safe, comfortable and confident in their environment then they can learn (and thrive!). SLC was the first part-time preschool in Evanston to offer an Inclusion Program (starting in the 70’s) to welcome and support children with varying abilities and learning styles. This program allows each classroom to be staffed with three teachers, providing a low teacher/child ratio.

The daily routine includes time for child-directed play called Free Choice and daily Gross Motor play in either the Bike Room, the full-size gym or outside at Raymond Park which is located across the street. Whole Group time allows children to develop their social skills and build connections and friendships while having fun! Enrichment classes include Music, Hot Shots, Lunch & Learn, Toddler Time (adult/child class) and Early Care and After Care programs.

School for Little Children believes every child should have access to educational opportunities despite any barriers they may have and values all families’ enrollment in the program regardless of ability to pay. If a family is seeking a relationship based, quality early childhood experience for their child and needs tuition support they can apply for financial assistance.
